Job Description

An environmental health specialist in the public bathing facilities program is responsible for routine surveillance and inspection of public pools, spas, beaches, and other recreational water facilities. Routine inspections of these licensed and unlicensed venues is to ensure compliance with the applicable state and local ordinances, identify risks of waterborne disease transmission to the public, and implement education, enforcement, or other interventions to reduce the risk of recreational water illness and injury. Routine inspections consist of visual inspection, water quality tests, and sample collection for bacteriological analysis. The environmental health specialist will also respond to complaints, injuries, and waterborne disease outbreaks as necessary. If assigned to the Secondary Hazardous Materials is responsible to complete training to fulfill responsibilities as a Secondary Hazmat responder. Secondary Hazardous Materials Specialist is responsible for conducting emergency responses, inspections, investigations and surveys to incidents or situations involving hazardous materials/wastes, infectious materials, environmental pollution and radiation sources. The Hazardous Materials Specialist performs twenty-four hour (24 hour) response on a rotating basis.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelors of Arts or Science in environmental health, environmental science, industrial hygiene, public health, biology, or closely related degree with science based curricula.
  • 1-2 years of previous experience in environmental or public health preferred.
  • Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) certification desired.
  • Required to have prior to hire, or within determined timeframe of hire date, certification as a Certified Pool and Spa Operator from National Swimming Pool Foundation.
  • Required to have prior to hire, or within determined timeframe of hire date, certification as a Certified Pool and Spa Inspector from National Swimming Pool Foundation.
  • Obtain State of Indiana Hazardous Materials Technician Certification within a year of employment depending on assignment.
