Job Description

The Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) is seeking a full time Surveillance Epidemiologist that will be responsible for organizing and providing epidemiological support to the position’s assigned areas within the health department and to collaborating organizations. A majority of the employee’s time will be centered on surveillance support and will be responsible for documenting and conducting syndromic surveillance in Marion County. This person will assure that the current data feeds’ structure and quality conform to Meaningful Use and the National Syndromic Surveillance (NSyS) Platform, while working to increase the public health value of the NSyS Platform by developing and evaluating tools, improving functionality and information gathered. This position will collaborate with state epidemiologists to standardize queries and work to maintain data provider’s engagement by assuring that their participation in public health surveillance provides them value. This person will be a co-lead on the Public Health Surveillance Workgroup. The remainder of the employee’s time will be spent on other projects within epidemiology related to surveillance, including program evaluation, development of reports and summaries, presentations to staff, partner agencies and the public, while also assisting with the evaluation section of grant applications pertaining to surveillance activities. This position is supported by a federal four year CDC grant and is based on renewal of the grant each year.

This position combines data management, analysis, evaluation, and reporting skills. Strong oral and written communication skills and an ability to communicate technical information to both professional and lay audiences are crucial in this position. This person should work well both independently and in a team setting. Relationship building and networking are important in this job setting.

Job Requirements

Candidates must have a Master’s Degree in Public Health or related discipline. A concentration in Epidemiology is preferred.  Training or experience in syndromic surveillance is also preferred.  Experience with electronic data analysis and data management is required.  Experience using SAS is highly desirable.  Knowledge of R is also preferred.  Candidates must hold a valid driver’s license.
